Cecilius Calvert
Cecilius Calvert was the first son and heir of George Calvert. He was raised a Catholic and attended Trinity College and Oxford. In 1628 he married a Catholic named Ann Arundell. He inherited the title Irish estates and the 10-12 million acres of American land in what became Colonial Maryland from his father. He served as the designer and first Lord Proprietor of Maryland from 1632-1675. Cecilius Calvert established Maryland on a sound and profitable area on the idea of his own personal fortune. He consistently encouraged religious toleration for all Christians living in his colony. His son Charles served as Governor of Maryland from 1661-1675 and as second Lord Proprietor and third Lord Baltimore from 1675 -1715.

Sir George and his son Cecilius were British who were rewarded with land in the new world. George was a Secretary of State to King James I. He was at first rewarded with a title to land in Newfoundland. He later asked James I's son, Charles I, for title to land north of Virginia that would become Maryland. This land was not signed over until after his death and was given to his son Cecilius. The Calverts were Roman Catholic, a religion which most inhabitants of the New World were prejudiced against. When Cecil Calvert, second Lord Baltimore, created the colony of Maryland, he formed it based on the ideas of freedom of religion and separation of church and state.Colonial Maryland became known as a haven for Roman Catholics in the New World. Cecil governed Maryland for forty-two years.
